Homemade Pizza Dough

Day 40 “Homemade Products with Brand-Name Quality

February 9, 2011

Having three boys, I can count on one hand the food that they would want to eat every day for the rest of their lives.  The answer that would rank in the number one position for all of them would be pizza.  To make homemade pizza dough is a great money saving trick that can offer pizza at over half the cost of a frozen pizza.  Factor in a pizza shop pizza and your savings are even greater.

The basis of this cookbook is to make products that you find in the store at home for a fraction of the cost.  Believe me I am always looking at ways to save money on my grocery bills.  Having 2 growing teens and 1 growing preteen that eat like food is going to run out.  Not only can you save on your grocery bill but you have control over the ingredients and know what goes into each item.  Homemade cereal, rice mixes, breads plus household cleaners.

The Ruling:  I have made many different varieties of store bought pizza mixes, frozen dough and homemade mixes and this one ranks right near the top.  It was easy to make plus it didn’t take a long time to rest and rise.  The kids liked it.  I made one pizza and there really was enough to make two.  We made pizza with pepperoni on it.  You can place whatever toppings you want.  Use leftover taco meat for taco pizza. Use leftover chicken and veggies with a bit of alfredo sauce for a fun pizza.  Another homemade crust that was a little more labor intesive but so delcious can be found here.

Ingredients:

  • 1 package yeast
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp. vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp. sugar
  • 1 tsp. salt

Directions:

  1. In a large bowl, add yeast to warm water and stir to dissolve.  Let set 2 minutes.  Add remaining ingredients.  Knead dough, adding extra flour, if needed, to form a workable dough.  Let rest 5 minutes.  Punch down and roll dough on lightly floured board to the shape of your pizza pans.
